summary

For African tribesmen coffee was a simple food and beverage. Now, it is sold in large quantities worldwide as one of the top in value in trade. Many people depend on it for their living and like drinking it. All coffee exporting countries depend on coffee as the main income. In 1975, a frost killed destroyed half the coffee trees. That changed the prices drastically. Brazil had to stop the export of coffee. Prices increased and farmers planted more. Coffee was in abundant and the prices fell. Farmers began substituting coffee for other crops. Both producers and consumers decided to limit production to what the market can absorb, have a reserve and sell at an agreeable price.

draft 6(final draft)

Ravi and his wife were farmers in India. They had no children as Ravi’s wife was unable to be pregnant. Ravi never thought of adopting a child as he had a feeling he will not be able to support it. That was the time when the British start sending people to work in the tea plantations in Sri Lanka. Ravi and his wife were also sent there.

One day after tiring work day, Ravi was going home in the night. As he walked along the dark valley to reach his small hut, he heard cries of a baby. When he looked around he saw a few months old baby in a rubbish bin. On top of the baby was a letter. The letter had some information about the baby. From the letter Ravi got to know that the baby is child of a Sri Lankan and the baby was left there as he wasn’t able to support it. Ravi felt that the bay will die if it is left there. He then thought of raising it as he own child. He brought the baby home and explained what happen to his wife. His wife also agreed with Ravi and kept the baby as their own child. They named the baby Surya.

Years went by. Surya became 8 years old. Ravi was getting older and weaker but still never stopped working for his family. Seeing his father working so hard, Surya also start to help his father in the tea plantations. That was the time when Sri Lanka got its independence. When Ravi got to hear the news many thoughts start to shoot up on his mind. He thought of giving Surya good education. He thought of building a new house and many more but he was no able to understand that because of the British leaving, he will have to suffer more.

Firstly Ravi was retrenched as he wasn’t able to speak Sinhala and to make it worst the Ceylon citizenship was announced. As Ravi’s forefathers didn’t live in Sri Lanka, Ravi and his family were stateless. Ravi was devastated. He was having mixed feelings. Having to think the government was unfair made him angry and unhappy but to think that he could not do anything more to help his family make him to commit suicide. Surya was left to support the family.

Being to support a family at 8 years old is no small thing but still Surya had to do it. He worked day and night. He worked various jobs. Even though he suffered, he worked hard and saved money. With that money he went to study. At first he found it hard to study and work but whenever he reminds himself of his father’s dream to make him a well educated person he tried his very best to study. Years just went on. Surya mother died of sickness and it was also a time when he needed to enter university. He was a brilliant student but still he was not allowed into the university he wanted. It was due to the university admission criteria. It was advantage toward the Sinhalese and even though the Tamils scored better results the Sinhalese were given the priority. He had no other way than to stop his education.

During that period of time Surya got to know that there was a group being formed to oppose the Sri Lankan government to get equal right for that Indian Tamils. Surya gave thought to the idea of joining this group. Soon he decided to join the group. Soon after Surya joined, the group planned an attack. They named themselves the Tamil tigers. That is when the civil war begun.
A lot of years of fighting went by. The Tamil tigers were preparing for the final attack on the Sri Lankan army. Surya was browsing through his mother’s thing for confidence and blessing from his mother. That is when he saw letter from his mother to him. From that letter he found out that he was an adopted child. Adding to that was him to find out that he wasn’t an Indian Tamil. He was shocked to know that he was fighting his own kind for so long. He was not able to stand the shock and so he fainted. His group mates carried him and left on the campsite to rest. The rest of the group went to fight. After a long fight the leader of the Tamil tigers was and continued by the whole group. The Sri Lankan government won. When Surya woke up he was in a confusion state. When he got to know that the government won he fled to India. There he planned and gathered a new team to help the remaining Indian Tamils in Sri Lanka.
